Important: Dates that fall on a weekend or holiday move to the next business day, so the exact date can shift slightly from year to year. Confirm your specific deadlines with us. We do not publish a single calendar year's exact dates here on purpose, because the right date depends on your entity type, filing period, and any extensions on file.

How the schedule works

Most individuals center their year on the April 15 filing deadline, while business owners juggle several dates: March 15 for S-corporation and partnership returns, April 15 for C-corporations and personal returns, quarterly estimated payments throughout the year, and payroll and sales tax filings on their own cycles. Missing any of them can mean penalties and interest, which is why we map out a personalized calendar for every client we serve.

If you are not sure which of these apply to you, that is exactly what we are here for. Reach out and we will build your deadline calendar around your specific situation.

"Deadlines are where good planning either pays off or falls apart. We do not wait for the date to arrive. We work backward from each one so the return is ready early and there are no surprises. Knowing your dates in advance is half the battle."

Common Questions

Deadline FAQ

What happens if I miss a tax filing deadline?

Missing a deadline can trigger failure-to-file and failure-to-pay penalties plus interest, which grow the longer the balance is outstanding. The penalty for filing late is usually steeper than for paying late, so it is almost always better to file on time even if you cannot pay in full. If you have already missed a date, contact us right away. We can often reduce or remove penalties through first-time abatement or reasonable cause.

Can I get an extension to file my tax return?

Yes. Individuals can request an automatic six-month extension to file, and businesses have comparable extension options. Important caveat: an extension gives you more time to file your paperwork, not more time to pay. Any tax owed is still due by the original deadline, so you should estimate and pay what you owe to avoid interest and penalties. We prepare and file extensions for clients every year.

When are quarterly estimated taxes due?

Federal estimated taxes are generally due in four installments: April 15, June 15, September 15 of the current year, and January 15 of the following year. They apply to self-employed individuals, business owners, and anyone with significant income that is not subject to withholding. New York State estimates follow the same schedule. We calculate quarterly estimates for clients so they avoid underpayment penalties.

Do these dates change every year?

The standard month and day stay the same from year to year, but when a deadline falls on a weekend or a legal holiday it moves to the next business day. That means the exact date can shift slightly each year. Always confirm your specific deadlines with us before you file.
